Am I a good candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Say goodbye to eye puffiness

Many men and women struggle with under-eye puffiness, which hereditary issues may cause due to enlarged fat pads, or suffer from eyelid ptosis—caused by excess skin that causes sagging or droopy upper eyelids.

Typically, patients are over 40 and have significant signs of aging around their eyes. However, Blepharoplasty is still an option for younger patients unhappy with their lower eyelid bags by avoiding an external incision with a transconjunctival approach to remove just a portion of the lower eyelid fat to smooth this area out for improved contour. Or perhaps want to add or refine a crease in their eyelids — this is called Westernization of eyelids, where a crease is created in the upper eyelid crease to convert an Asian upper eyelid. The Epicanthal fold may also be modified if desired to a more Western appearance.

Your Blepharoplasty Procedure

Dr. Halpern will create markings on your eyelids to know the precise amount of skin to remove. Then your anesthesia is administered. Local anesthesia is often used, along with IV sedation, to keep you comfortable throughout your surgery for an upper eyelid surgery.

Next, an incision is made within the natural crease of your eyelid. Excess skin is removed, and a small amount of fat and muscle may be removed in some cases. For a lower eyelid surgery, anesthesia is also needed. The primary goal for this procedure is to remove extra fat in the eye bag area, reduce puffiness, and address sagging skin as needed. A blepharoplasty usually takes about 30 minutes to one hour but may take up to two hours if both procedures are performed concurrently.

Eyelid Recovery & Results

Dramatic and Significant Results

You can expect significant bruising and swelling during the first five to seven days after your surgery. Ice packs and cool compresses will help keep swelling down. However, major pain is not common after your surgery. It is also recommended to sleep elevated and use your prescribed eye drops to reduce infection risks. Most patients take a full week off of work to recover. If you have non-dissolving sutures, these are removed after week one post-op. Full recovery can take a few weeks, but this depends on the extent of your surgery. A blepharoplasty does not stop the aging process. However, it takes years off your appearance and lasts up to 15 years. As you age, the skin around your eyes will continue to age as well.

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure and is not submitted by our practice to any insurance for reimbursement.

Dr. Halpern will discuss all of your non-surgical options during your consultation. However, Botox and Dysport can non-surgically improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and raise your eyebrows to help change the appearance of drooping eyelids. Dermal fillers such as Restylane are viable options, as well as TempSure Radiofrequency resurfacing. However, these options are not permanent and do not provide the full benefits of a Blepharoplasty.

Whether you had local anesthesia or general anesthesia, you will need someone to drive you home after your surgery because your eyes will have had ointment placed, which may temporarily affect your ability to see clearly and you will have to be driven home.
