Align and Refine with a Breast Implant Revision

Dr. David E. Halpern offers Breast Implant Revision surgery for women who need new breast implants or other corrective breast surgery at Tampa Bay Plastic surgery.

Breast Implant Revision surgery corrects or alters previous breast augmentation procedures performed elsewhere, or if you’re unhappy with your results and decide to have additional surgery. In addition, your revision surgery can address various concerns from your previous breast augmentation, such as wanting increased or decreased size, capsular contracture, asymmetry, or simply to further improve the look and feel of your breasts. Some older type implants may be prone or have a high risk of being ruptured and need to be exchanged for newer, safer cohesive (gummy bear type) gel implants or baffled multi-chamber saline Ideal Implants which feel more natural.

Triple board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David E. Halpern specializes in Breast Implant Revision surgery for women in Tampa and surrounding areas. To learn more about if this procedure is suitable for you, schedule your consultation at Tampa Bay Plastic Surgery.

What is Breast Implant Revision Surgery?

Breast revision surgery is an aesthetic breast procedure for women in Tampa Bay and surrounding metropolitan areas who have had breast implants and need their breasts to be redone for various reasons. However, even though breast implants can provide a new shape for your body and confidence in your appearance, there are times when you may want them removed.

Patients sometimes decide to have their implants removed, which is their right, and at times we offer complete capsule removal when possible and safe to do so. Most patients get relief with implant removal and is not related to how much capsule is removed. If capsules are removed, the patients will require postop drains to remove any fluid or blood removal. En bloc capsulectomy can be performed, but a detailed discussion of this type of procedure and its increased time and risks usually makes it unnecessary. Risks of ALCL (lymphoma) in patients that have textured Allergan implants are very low, but these types of implants should be removed as recommended by the FDA.

Am I a good candidate for Breast Implant Revision?

Feel and Look Confident Again

Ideal candidates for breast implant revision must be in overall good health. With Breast Implant Revision Tampa patients can correct the following issues from previous implants:

  • Implant rupture
  • Severe Wrinkling and rippling
  • Implant migration or rotation that causes asymmetry
  • Uniboob or symmastia—which occurs when implants are inserted too close to each other
  • Presence of Allergan textured implants (styles 468, style 410, style 168) which have been recalled by the FDA
  • Undesirable size
  • Desire to remove implants due to symptoms or pain or deformity
  • Capsular contracture which may deform the breast or be painful

Your Breast Implant Revision Procedure

Revise | Refine

Dr. Halpern personalizes each procedure depending on the intricacies of your treatment plan. Your Tampa Breast Implant Revision is an outpatient procedure. You will be administered general anesthesia and must have someone drive you home after your recovery. Your breast implant revision approach will vary depending on what needs to be repaired.

Increasing the size of your breast implants

During your consultation, Dr. Halpern will discuss implant size options. If you choose to increase your breast size, he may need to create more room inside the breast tissue to insert your new implant or support the current breast pocket with resorbable surgical mesh if needed.

Additional Reading

If you want to decrease the size of your implants, a lift may be needed, or he may need to decrease the size of your pocket with internal sutures and/or resorbable mesh, which can act as an internal bra. You may decide to remove them altogether, and additional surgeries may be necessary to do a breast lift and remove extra skin or have fat grafted to fill in your breasts.

Capsular Contracture

If you suffer from painful scar tissue that formed around your breast implant—also known as capsular contracture—Dr. Halpern removes the scar tissue during a capsulectomy before inserting new implants.

Mastopexy

A breast lift may be performed concurrently with your breast implant revision if needed. This includes repositioning the breast and nipple to a new/higher position on your chest.

Breast Implant Revision Recovery & Results

Your Refreshed Look - Achieved

Once your Breast Implant Revision surgery is complete, Dr. Halpern will wrap your breasts and place you into a compression bra to help reduce swelling. You can expect to be off work for several days up to a week, depending on your personal recovery. You will need to avoid lifting your arms and heavy objects, and depending on your treatment plan, surgical drains may have been placed to help alleviate fluid and blood build-up. Once your swelling subsides and you remove your compression bra, you will notice results immediately. However, it takes about three months to fully realize all of your results. Your incisions will take up to a year to fade.
