What is Fraxel?

Collagen Production Accelerator

Fraxel laser treatments break up the treatment area into fractional sections, targeting 20 to 40 percent of the treated area with the laser’s energy and leaving the remaining skin intact to support the healing process known as fractional photothermolysis. As a result, the innovative treatment offers a lot less and relatively NO downtime than traditional lasers.

What are the benefits of Fraxel?

Specific repair for effective results

There are choices with your Tampa Fraxel laser skin resurfacing, and during your consultation, your laser specialist will recommend the best type of Fraxel treatment to address your skin concerns and safe enough for your skin type and tone.

Fraxel options include:

Fraxel Re:store

This non-ablative treatment does not disrupt the surface of your skin but effectively treats sun damage and fine lines and wrinkles—especially around the eyes. Three to five treatments are recommended to stimulate collagen production. After each treatment with Fraxel Tampa patients can expect six days of downtime.

Fraxel Dual

There are two lasers combined in this treatment—hence the name. Fraxel Dual uses Erbium technology to heat the dermal layer of your skin to increase collagen production and a Thulium laser to focus on skin-related issues, such as sun damage, sunspots, and skin discoloration. Doctors and specialists consider this treatment similar to a ‘magic eraser’ because of its effectiveness in “erasing” pigmentation issues on the skin. You can expect to fully recover from this treatment in one week.

Your Fraxel Procedure

Innovative laser skin resurfacing

Before your treatment, a topical anesthetic is applied to keep you comfortable. It may take up to an hour for the numbing cream to take effect, but this makes it less likely to feel the heat of the laser. Your laser specialist will divide the treatment area into sections, and each section will receive four passes of the Fraxel laser. Your overall procedure takes about 20 minutes after your numbing cream takes effect.

Fraxel Recovery

Beautiful skin that is worth the wait

Depending on the intensity of your Fraxel treatment, the amount of time needed for your skin to heal will vary. Typically patients may have pink or red color after treatment for a couple of hours and may put on cream or makeup afterward. No downtime is necessary. However, based on your skin quality and texture, you may need three to four treatments spaced four to six weeks apart to reach optimal results.

Fraxel Results

You can expect full results

You can expect full results to be more noticeable after 2 to four weeks from your last treatment. Overall, laser resurfacing results last about three years, but your laser specialist will be able to recommend skincare and treatment options to prolong your results. It is essential to incorporate a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher for daily use.

Fraxel Frequently Asked Questions

Before your fractional laser skin resurfacing treatment, a topical numbing cream is applied to keep you comfortable. Next, you hear and feel what sounds like tiny rubber bands snapping along with experiencing gentle heat over the treated areas. Your experienced laser specialist will adjust the laser levels to keep you comfortable throughout your treatment.

Your laser specialist at Tampa Bay Plastic Surgery will assist you with choosing the proper laser treatment for your skin type and tone to achieve ideal results and minimize risks. For example, darker skin colors are more likely to experience hyper or hypopigmentation depending on your skin tone, but all skin types may be safely treated. Pretreatment with retinol and hydroquinone reduces these risks to a very small percentage, and the non-ablative nature of the treatment makes this even safer.

Your laser specialist can confirm the number of treatments needed after assessing your skin concerns during your consultation. Some patients may need additional treatment for Fraxel Dual or Re:pair. Fraxel Re:store often requires two to three additional treatments for effective removal of brown spots and up to five treatments to reduce the appearance of acne scars.

Your treatment cost will vary based on the number of areas being treated. The best way to determine cost is to come in for a consultation for a skin assessment to discuss your skin-related issues. Your laser specialist will be able to customize a treatment plan that meets your objectives.

Laser skin resurfacing is an aesthetic treatment that medical insurance does not cover. Be sure to check with one of our laser specialists about seasonal or promotional skin resurfacing packages.

Some alternatives to laser skin resurfacing include chemical peels, microneedling, microdermabrasion, and IPL treatments. These alternatives are popular resurfacing treatments for sun damage, acne scars, and addressing various signs of aging.
