Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery): What you should expect from this Procedure?

Rhinoplasty Surgery at Tampa Bay Plastic Surgery

Noses are unique, yet the most prominent facial feature and many women and men alike are self-conscious about the size or shape of their nose. Selecting your Tampa Rhinoplasty surgeon should be a decision based on skill and expertise. Dr. David E. Halpern has helped transform hundreds of noses in the Tampa Bay Area, creating beautiful new profiles. As a highly skilled Triple-Board Certified rhinoplasty surgeon, Dr. David Halpern works with patients on their individual goals in order to unveil a natural-looking nose that enhances their distinct beauty and increases their level of confidence.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

The term Rhinoplasty refers to “plastic surgery performed on the nose.” Surgeries can be open or closed. During the procedure, an incision is made, the nasal skin and soft tissues are separated and the nasal framework is corrected in terms of form and function. After the correction has been made, the surgeon closes the incisions with sutures and tissue glue and applies a pack or stent to immobilize the correction for the initial healing phase.

Are You a Good Rhinoplasty Candidate?

With Rhinoplasty Tampa patients can attain a more attractive profile by:

  • Removing a prominent nasal bump
  • Restoring symmetry
  • Widening or narrowing the bridge and/or nostrils
  • Reshaping the tip, and
  • Improving structural problems caused by a deviated septum or other obstructions.

The ideal Rhinoplasty candidate should have good overall health, a facial structure that has finished growing and be able to quit smoking for at least two weeks before and after the surgery. The best way to know for sure if rhinoplasty is right for you is to schedule a meeting with Dr. David E. Halpern to discuss the possibilities and your health history.

Risks for Rhinoplasty may include:

The biggest risk for rhinoplasty is disappointment or dissatisfaction with the end result.

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Persistent swelling
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Scarring
  • Skin discoloration
  • Numbness or pain
  • Postoperative deformity

Up to 15 percent of nose jobs require later revision. It is important that the patient choose a surgeon he or she is comfortable with, so communication is clear. Many different types of tissue are involved in this operation – bone, cartilage, skin, fat, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, perichondrium, periosteum, mucosa – and certain elements of healing are not always under the surgeon’s control. However, Dr. David E. Halpern is committed to his patients’ satisfaction. He will work closely with you during the preoperative planning phase to take every step necessary to warrant success.

Preparing For Rhinoplasty

Bring in pictures of celebrities with noses you admire. Dr. David E. Halpern is committed to providing you with a look that is not only beautiful but natural and distinctively “you” as well.

It is not always ideal to “transplant” a completely different look on your face. However, photographs serve as a good visual representation of beauty standards to ensure you are on the same page with the Rhinoplasty surgeon. Dr. David E. Halpern’s most-requested noses include Natalie Portman, Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman, Kate Beckinsale, Adriana Lima, Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johansson, Carey Mulligan, Emma Stone, Elizabeth Taylor, and Kate Middleton. Dr. David E. Halpern may also ask you to:

  • Get a lab test
  • Adjust your current medications
  • Abstain from alcohol, and
  • Quit smoking prior to surgery.
  • Stop taking herbal supplements or anti-inflammatories

What Should I Expect With A Nose Job?

typically performed under general anesthesia

The Rhinoplasty surgery takes about 2-3 hours and is typically performed under general anesthesia – through twilight sedation may be used for minor nose reshaping. You will need someone to stay with you during the surgery and drive you home afterward.

Questions to Ask At Your Rhinoplasty Consultation

  • Do you have a chronic medical condition like uncontrolled high blood pressure or diabetes?
  • Do you worry you will be unable to stop smoking in order to heal properly?
  • Have you had previous surgery done on your face?
  • Do you have a family history of clotting or bleeding disorders?
  • Is your body still healing from a recent pregnancy? Are you breastfeeding?

Being candid with your plastic surgeon about potential obstacles is the best way to reduce your risk of complications.

Questions to Ask Your Nose Surgeon

  • Are you board-certified in plastic surgery?
  • How many rhinoplasties have you done?
  • Where are your nose jobs performed?
  • Are my expectations realistic?
  • Am I a good candidate?
  • What risks are involved?
  • What will my recovery entail?
  • What is your rate of complications, and how are they managed?
  • What if I am unhappy with my results?

Your recovery timetable may progress as follows:

  • Day 1 – Use cool compresses to alleviate bruising and swelling. Change dressing as often as needed (10-20 times).
  • Days 2-3 – Expect peak bruising and swelling.
  • Days 5-10 – Stitches dissolve. External dressings are removed. Bruising subsides. You may return to work at this time.
  • Weeks 2-4 – Much swelling diminishes, breathing improves, and you may resume light to moderate exercise.
  • 1 Month – You may resume more strenuous activity like jogging or aerobics.
  • 1 Year – Expect final results.

Why Do Rhinoplasty Results Take So Long To Appear?

Individuals heal at different rates

Rhinoplasty has a 90% “Worth It” rating on RealSelf.com, an unbiased plastic surgery review site. One thing to keep in mind is that rhinoplasty can take a long time for full results to be visible. For first time surgeries, it could take 12 months for full healing of the blood and lymphatic flow in the nose is altered.

For revision surgeries, it could take as long as 18 months due to scar tissue and contracture. This does not mean you’ll be walking around with a huge, swollen nose for a year, of course! Individuals heal at different rates, but typically, the most noticeable swelling resolves within two months. You will probably feel as though your nose is still more swollen than normal at four months. That last 20% of the swelling is slowly healing. The amount of swelling will depend upon the areas of the nose treated, the surgical approach, skin thickness, postoperative care, number of past surgeries, and individual healing ability.

Rhinoplasty Frequently Asked Questions

The nose has not finished fully developing until girls reach the age of 15 or 16. For boys, it is 16 or 17. Most Nose Surgery or rhinoplasty patients are between the ages of 18 and 50.

You will need to avoid resting glasses on the bridge of your nose for the first month after Nose Surgery. Either wear contact lenses or suspend the glasses with forehead tap. Glasses often need to be refitted once healing completes. If you are undergoing septoplasty only, you may wear your glasses the following day.

It is important to keep your external nasal dressing completely dry. You may shower or bathe the day after surgery, but do not get the dressing wet. Once the dressing is removed (after the first few days to a week), you can gently wash your face, but avoid rubbing the nose.

Rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis, but you may elect to spend the night in a hospital if you so desire.

Avoid travel by plane for at least two weeks after surgery.

Dr. David E. Halpern recommends that patients wear sunblock of SPF 15 or higher whenever they are out in the sun (for at least six months) to avoid long-term skin discoloration.

To minimize swelling, you may apply ice wrapped in a dry cloth or cool, clean compresses four to six times a day for the first 24 hours. Also, sleep with your head elevated using an extra pillow for at least one week.

Though you will be tempted, try to avoid picking dried blood out of your nose or blowing your nose for at least the first three weeks after surgery.

Most Rhinoplasty procedures are considered “cosmetic”, but you may be able to obtain coverage if a medical doctor can substantiate your claim of a structural issue that impairs breathing. You can expect the first few days to be fairly uncomfortable when bruising and swelling are at their peak and the nose is bandaged and stuffed with packaging. Dr. David E. Halpern will prescribe pain medication to get you through the first week of recovery, so be sure to have your script filled and take as directed to head off any unnecessary discomfort. You will need to have button-down shirts available to avoid pulling clothing over your head while you heal.
