BOTOX® and Dysport® in Tampa
Injectables like BOTOX®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau® have become a popular, affordable way for patients to restore youthfulness in the face by relaxing the muscles that create unwanted frown lines, worry lines, and crow’s feet. They not only prevents the formation of new wrinkles, but also soften and erase existing lines and creases.
Facial aging is a complex process with many contributing factors, depending on a person’s genetics and lifestyle. Over time, collagen breaks down, facial volume diminishes, the skin loses some of its laxity, and the continual contraction of muscles creates dramatic wrinkles and creases.
Dr. David Halpern is a triple-board certified plastic surgeon in Tampa Bay, FL who has skillfully performed BOTOX® injections since BOTOX® was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2002. We also offer Dysport® and Jeuveau® (Newtox) so that patients have choices.
What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® is an FDA-approved, trademarked drug derived from the bacterial toxin Botulin. When injected in small amounts, it can effectively weaken overactive muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, such as crow’s eyes, forehead creases, and frown lines between the eyebrows for a period of 3-4 months. It doesn’t fill lines — just makes it harder for the muscles that cause wrinkles and lines to contract.
BOTOX® isn’t the only method used to treat face and neck wrinkles. Other similar options include Dysport® and Jeuveau®. You may also look into chemical peels or microdermabrasion for mild surface-level issues, dermal fillers to soften moderate facial lines and wrinkles in other parts of the face, or more invasive treatments like brow lifts, facelifts and neck lifts for severe wrinkles. If you are interested in turning back the clock, you may also ask about alternate products like Xeomin and Restylane.
BOTOX® Before and After Results
You may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours for moderate to severe frown lines. Results should last for three to four months. However, it has been more recently suggested that there are some lasting effects of BOTOX® use. During the treatment period, the drug improves skin elasticity by up to 30 percent – which can also aid in the prevention of new wrinkles long-term, according to a Canadian study published in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery by dermatologist Dr. James Bonaparte of the University of Ottawa and Dr. David Ellis of the University of Toronto.
BOTOX® Cost and Treatment Plan
BOTOX®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau® are not permanent solutions. Once you discontinue treatment, the lines and wrinkles will gradually reappear. Signing up for the Brilliant Distinctions program can help you save on the cost of BOTOX® and other treatments and will keep you updated with reminders when to seek treatment – usually every 3-4 months.
These are all technique-sensitive treatments. Your cost includes the price of the product and Dr. David E. Halpern’s skills and expertise.
The ideal BOTOX® candidate has:
- Moderate to severe dynamic wrinkles, particularly around the eyes and forehead
- Good health, with no severe illness, unmanaged disease, or infection
- No history of neuromuscular disease (like multiple sclerosis or myasthenia gravis)
- No allergy to botulinum toxin type A, human albumin, or sodium chloride
- An age of at least 18, and is not pregnant or nursing
Remember, do not stop taking any medications unless directed by your healthcare providers. Also keep in mind that your candidacy for BOTOX®, Dysport®, or Jeuveau® will ultimately be determined during a consultation.
Preparing for the Injections
Before your treatment, you’ll need to stop taking any medications or herbal supplements that can thin the blood, cause excessive bruising, or increase the risk of adverse reaction. This may include:
- Fish oil
- Gingko Biloba
- St. John’s Wart
- Vitamin E
You should also avoid drinking tea or alcohol several days before your injection.
Remember, do not stop taking any medications unless directed by your healthcare providers.
The injections typically take less than 10 minutes to administer. A tiny needle delivers the drug directly into the hyper-reactive muscle. Some patients report that their injections felt “like a pinprick” or “a pinch.” The surgeon may use a cold pack or topical anesthetic to numb the area prior to injection to minimize discomfort. The number of injections required will depend upon the severity of your wrinkles and their locations. For BOTOX®, for example, you can generally expect up to 3 injections for the crow’s feet area and up to 5 injections in the frown lines area.
This is considered a “lunch break treatment” since there is no set recovery time necessary. There may be slight bruising or redness at the injection sites, though, so you may want to schedule when you can take the rest of the day off. With BOTOX®, it takes approximately two hours for the toxin to bind to the nerve, so you want to avoid excessive activity which may increase circulation and wash away the solution from where it was injected.
Injections may cause serious side effects that can be life threatening. For example, get medical help right away if you have any of these problems any time (hours to weeks) after injection of BOTOX® Cosmetic:
Problems swallowing, speaking, or breathing, due to weakening of associated muscles, can be severe and result in loss of life. You are at the highest risk if these problems are preexisting before injection. Swallowing problems may last for several months.
Spread of toxin effects. The effect of botulinum toxin may affect areas away from the injection site and cause serious symptoms including: loss of strength and all-over muscle weakness, double vision, blurred vision and drooping eyelids, hoarseness or change or loss of voice, trouble saying words clearly, loss of bladder control, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing.
Things You Should Tell Your Specialist Before Your Appointment
Be sure you tell your specialist if:
- You are taking prescription or nonprescription medicines, including vitamins and supplements.
- You have been treated with BOTOX® or a similar product in the last four months.
- You have a history of infections or are currently taking an antibiotic.
- You are taking allergy medicine, sleep aids, muscle relaxants, or cold medicine.
- You have ever experienced any side effects or adverse reactions from past cosmetic treatments.
- You have a serious muscle or nerve condition like ALS, Lambert-Eaton Syndrome or Lou Gehrig’s.
- You have had surgery on your face or plan to do so.
- You have weakness in your forehead muscles, trouble raising your brown, or droopy eyelids.
- You are pregnant, nursing, or plan to become pregnant soon.
- Do men get BOTOX®?
There has been a 310% increase in the number of men getting BOTOX® from 2000 to 2014. More than 400,000 men receive the injections each year. Celebrities like Simon Cowell, Bill O’Reilly, and Jared Leto have had them done.
- Will it look like I’ve had work done?
When injected by a licensed, skilled medical expert, your results should look completely natural. You will not lose the ability to show expression.
- When should I start using BOTOX® and similar treatments?
Sixty and seventy-year-olds can receive BOTOX® treatment and still see observable results. It may take a full two weeks to see results, especially when the wrinkles are more deep-set. However, it all depends on the unique case. Keep in mind Dysport® generally has faster-acting results, with changes oftentimes seen in just 3-4 days. Ideally, you can begin this type of treatment just as fine lines are beginning to appear and continue with treatment as you age to prevent deeper expression lines from forming.
