This time of year is a time of rebirth and cleansing, so what better time to consider facial rejuvenation and anti-aging with injection therapy? Botox is the big name in the game, but experienced plastic surgeons understand that it’s not the best product for every application. Dr. David Halpern is skilled in using Allergan Botox and Medicis Dysport, in addition to other popular dermal fillers, to smooth out wrinkles and create the most natural appearance.
Dr. David Halpern explains, “Botox is a very effective neurotoxin which softens forehead, glabellar and deep facial rhytides. Botox may be administered on its own or in conjunction with other dermal fillers to assist with facial rejuvenation. Dermal fillers are distinctively different in their makeup and purpose, as well as their mode of action. They address loss in facial volume, which is one major aspect of facial aging.”
At Tampa Bay Plastic Surgery, patients may be treated with Botox, Dysport, Restylane-L, Perlane-L, Radiesse, Belotero, or Sculptra. Some of these Botox alternatives and dermal fillers are discussed below:

What It Is: A firm gel filler made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in connective tissues. It works by plumping the skin, attracting and binding water molecules to maintain volume, and using chemical crosslinks to delay breakdown by skin enzymes.
What It’s Used For: Moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles; Lip enhancements; Nasolabial folds; Laugh, Lipstick and Marionette lines around the mouth; Add volume to the cheeks or eye channel.
How Long It Lasts: 6 months
What It Is: A thicker filler made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in connective tissues. It works by plumping the skin, attracting and binding water molecules to maintain volume, and using chemical crosslinks to delay breakdown by skin enzymes.
What It’s Used For: Moderate to severe wrinkles; Filling deep creases around the mouth; Nasolabial folds; Increased lip volume; Facial contouring and augmentation of the cheeks, chin, lips and jowls; Soften the appearance of sunken eyes.
How Long It Lasts: 6 – 12 months
What It Is: Dysport is a new form of botulinum toxin A that relaxes the nerves responsible for tightening the facial muscles and causing needless wrinkles. It’s different from Botox in that it takes effect quicker (just 2-5 days) and costs about half the price of Botox.
What It’s Used For: Moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows; Crow’s feet eye wrinkles; Deep forehead creases.
How Long It Lasts: 3 – 4 months
What It Is: Sculptra differs from other fillers as it is an FDA-approved solution of absorbable polylactic acid – not a gel – that is injected into an area and requires three injections over the course of three months. The solution stimulates collagen deposition in the area from the body’s own natural response and adds tissue over time.
What It’s Used For: Sculptra is used as a cosmetic contour filler in the face, but should not be used in superficial areas or the lips.
How Long It Lasts: 3 months to build and lasts 6 – 18 months
